State Library Institute Building

The brief was to document the repainting of all external surfaces of the Institute Building and repair external timbers and walls.

With support of the State Library, S9 amended the scope to investigate the original unified colour scheme and return the building to its original scheme. In order to do so the design team undertook extensive paint scrapes and samples of the building the determine the first colours and replicated the colour scheme from a 1910 photograph.

Rising salt damp was discovered during the project delivery, affecting the buildings plinth and therefore requiring additional works and replacement. All works were completed in accordance with the principles of the Burra Chapter, both on time and on budget.
